Dec 30th 2010

Not quite sure where to start this…ESSAY!!

Ok, first to bring things up to date I guess.

July was a pretty busy month around here with getting the halter horses fit up and ready for Canadian Nationals. Miss Sara Plourde spent the better part of the summer out here learning how to fit up the halter horses as well as getting some miles on some of the green broke horses. I’m sure that by the end of the summer, if she thought her folks wouldn’t have noticed Layne in her bedroom, he would have gone home with her. LOL July saw a close to breeding season, and mares being sorted back into their appropriate pastures. Mare with foals that were not bred back, were sent out on to the alfalfa field. Lookin N Touchin (Alley) was still being treated for pneumonia, and although not out of the woods, she was beginning to improve slowly by the end of the month. Shes Lookin To Score (Susie) and Girls Gone Solo (Solo) were brought in and weaned the end of July, as Susie was to begin getting fit on, and Solo had a cut on her hind leg that needed to be doctored.
August was full of excitement, anticipation, and HUGE disappointment as well. The day before we were to leave for Canadian National, the girl we had made arrangements with months in advance to “ranch sit” cancelled at 11 o’clock at night with no real explanation!! Needless to say, on such short notice there was no way to make other arrangements. Since plans had been in place for Jenni and Jason to take that week off to visit with Jason’s Family that was up from Oklahoma and Missouri – there was NO way I was pulling them home!! So, although we made it closer to Nationals this year then last, we still didn’t make it!  Needless to say, the “friend” short list just got shorter. We (Shaunna, Sara and Myself) did manage to have a few riding lessons out here at the ranch with Cal Jackson. I know that we all enjoyed the lessons, and I personally learned A LOT!! There were a great many things that I had been taught that were completely bass ackwards to the way things are done now. I know that I am very thankful to Cal for showing me the mistakes of my past instructor, and I look forward to many more lessons from Cal in the New Year!!

September saw us make the SQHA show in Moose Jaw. Picka Layne Fella (Layne), and Lookin Forsum Touch (Woody) both had a really great showing for their first time off the ranch! Layne stood well, and I received some really positive comments/feedback from the judges. Woody was first under both judges in both his classes, and although he placed we need a little more work away from home so that he pays a little more attention to me then his surroundings. All in all it was a good showing for the boys, and I couldn’t have been happier!! Miss Susie unfortunately didn’t make her show debut due to her mommy (me) getting a bit carried away with the clippers!! Lol There was no way that I was giving her a body cut that was the closeness required for surgery 2 days before the show!!! OOPS!!! Hindsight being 20/20 I should have taken her, as Susie would have done well. We came home from the show on Monday to find the house filled with black toxic smoke, and Jenni/Jason and Atli hanging out in the barn. Apparently the hot water heater had caught on fire filling the entire house with toxic smoke/fumes! I’m very thankful that they were home when it happened, and that thanks to Jason’s quick thinking, the fire was kept to the laundry room!! Everyone is safe and sound, and we still have a house to live in!! lol Unfortunately due to the surprise fire we had to purchase a new hot water heater, and a new washing machine on the 15th of September which completely drained the bank account of the extra funds saved up to go to the Region Two Experience in Rapid City, SD. Then, as if enough things hadn’t hindered us, the alternator decided to die in the 2007 F350 leaving me stranded just outside of Moose Jaw! I called Kyla on her cell, and she cut her last class REAL short to drive the hour and a half from Assiniboia to Moose Jaw to come rescue her mommy from Moose Jaw Ford!! Thanks Kiddo!

October….yes, the month of October started off the way that September ended!! October 4th – Trevor and Jason were gone on a trip to Portal, ND to meet and pilot a semi from there to Regina when Trevor gets a call from the Regina RCMP just after 9 am letting him know that they have recovered his 2007 F350….strange, since Moose Jaw Ford is open at 7 am, and no one from there has called!! Needless to say, the truck was indeed stolen; Trevor was the one to call Moose Jaw Ford to let them know what had happened to the truck!! Nice!! Anyways, we FINALLY got the truck back the 18th of December, and as we speak are still fighting with Moose Jaw Ford and their Insurance in regards to the truck. I must say, that I personally am EXTREMELY disappointed in the management at Moose Jaw Ford and how they have chosen to handle (or lack there of) this entire situation! Ford Canada should be appalled by the way this dealership conducts business!! Anyways, enough of the rant. October also saw Not Yella But Mella in the barn due to a kick from another mare that lacerated her vulva clear through! The vet was called, pictures were taken and emailed, only to find out what I had suspected – Short of Vaginal reconstructive surgery (which there are no guarantees and costly) there was nothing much we could do, other then Pen G, and the same care that we had given Score Me A Cowboy (Agnes) the year before. Best case, she would be in the barn until January or February… Needless to say, she is all healed up, things look fantastic, and she was kicked back out to the pasture (a different one this time ) the beginning of December.

November was snow filled, cold, and “normal” for this part of the country at this time of the year!! Lol I took a couple of trips in the pilot truck out to BC for Trevor. I did wake up a couple of mornings on a mountain which was pretty cool! Alley is back in the barn, as I noticed that she was a little “off” in the way she was travelling out in the pasture. So I brought her in and within 24 hrs she blew out an abscess in her front foot. Although fuzzy and recovering nicely from having had pneumonia, she is this winter the way that Harley (Barlnks Connection) was last year – Easier to count the places where there is still hair cover on her then all the bite marks lol (it’s not that bad, she was just getting beat up a bit more then I would have liked to see in the pasture). She is putting weight back on, her foot is healed up fantastic, and she is back to being the spoiled barn brat that we are all use to!!

December was a month of more mechanical difficulties, and finishing things long forgotten for me. The Bobcat Toolcat blew a tire the beginning of the month (who new a new one of those itty bitty tires was $400!!), then a week after getting that dealt with, one of the pins on the H plate that attaches the arm to the multitude of attachments snapped while we were pushing snow!! (Again, who would have thought that a solid pin 1 ¼ inches around and 8 inches long would be worth $160!!!) Never mind the H plate that is all bent to crap from the weight of the snow filled bucket falling– that baby is just under $1000!! OUCH OUCH OUCH!!!! Thank goodness for Kyla’s boyfriend Kyle! Kyle has been putting bales in for us every 4-5 days with the tractor (which neither Jason nor I know how to operate….yet)!! Jason has been handling the barn solo this last month as I have been in the house reorganizing, sorting, chucking, washing and painting!! Painting that has been left unfinished since we moved in here the fall of 2005….not sure, but I’m thinking it was time!! Kyle who is not afraid of doing electrical work hung my dining room fixture that was a Christmas gift in 2005!!! I must say that I do feel a great sense of accomplishment and completeness with all the painting and other work being done. Christmas has come and gone for another year, leaving us all 20 lbs heavier, and cabbage rolled out!!

We have also made the decision to drastically cut back on our number’s so that we are able to enjoy and promote those horses we do keep. There is very little enjoyment in looking after 60 head even with Jason being my saving grace in the barn. Neither one of us has enough time to dedicate to each individual horse the way it should be. Therefore, keep an eye on the Facebook Page for Zavaduk Quarter Horses, and on the FOR SALE PAGE on the website… there will be prices listed on those that we would like to get moved ASAP, and all those prices are negotiable!! These are NOT CULLS, and if it were financially feasible, there are very few that would be for sale. These horses were purchased/kept back with a breeding plan in mind, and the geldings were to be shown. Unfortunately time, and a tough decision in regards to the route we want to take our breeding program has left us no choice but to thin numbers so that there is time to concentrate on those that will best suit the new direction of our breeding program. As much as we personally love the idea of spending time showing Western Pleasure and Reining horses, I have come to the realization that I am most comfortable, and confident in an English Saddle, and keep in mind, I’m not getting any younger either! That being said, there is no sense keeping good horses around that we’re just not going to ride or show (especially if they are more geared to western/all around events). The other horses on the website, that there is NOT a “for sale” label on are also for sale, either for a realistic price, a good home, or a combination of both. If you see something of interest to you feel free to drop us an email, you never know the kind of day I may be having, and EVERYTHING on the place may be for sale including the dog!!!

As the year comes to a close, and I sit here typing this out, reflecting on everything that has taken place in 2010, I must say it has been one HELL of a year!! It has been a year of making some FANTASTIC new friends and family (and you gals know who you are!!!), doing away with some “friends and family” that were negative and toxic people!! It has been a year of hardships that have made me realize that I AM CAPABLE AND CAN ATTAIN MY GOALS WITHOUT CERTAIN PEOPLE IN MY LIFE (contrary to what some have been telling me for years!). It has been a year of personal growth, confidence, revelations and thankfulness!! There are a great many things that I would have traded the outcome of 2 or 3 years ago, but I can honestly say that this year, although a rather tough year to “chew on”, I wouldn’t change a dang thing!!! Next year has some pretty positive and incredible goals set for us here at ZQH Ranch. Although some of them may seem trivial to others, there are some pretty simple yet MAJOR goals and aspirations set forth for us to achieve! We are truly working as a team with the WHOLE interests of everyone at the ranch in mind, and that makes for a pretty exciting year waiting in the wings!!!

To all our Clients, Friends, Family, and Friends that are now Family, May 2011 hold as much hope, promise and inspiration to you as it does everyone at Zavaduk Quarter Horses!

Happy New Year, God Bless and Hug your horse!

The entire gang at ZQH Ranch!

June 22nd, 2010

Well, it’s been just over a month since my last update, and we have been kept rather busy!  The weather has been anything but cooperative this last month!! Last weekend we received 6 & ½ inches in 18 hrs, and that only added to the mess we had going on from rains prior.  Pens are sloppy and disgusting which then adds on the added task of treating horses for scratches which is annoying more then anything! Lol We will however preserver, because as they say “if you don’t like the weather, just wait 10 minutes and it’s sure to change!” Chad has been really busy in the pilot truck following Trevor and a few other Mullen drivers around.  He just got back from Utah, and is leaving again Thursday for a run from ND to Ft McMurray.  Obviously Trevor is working like crazy as things have finally started to pick up…so I’m sure I won’t be seeing much of him this summer.  Jason is being kept busy with the barn chores, as well as helping get horses fit for show.  Jenni, ah…poor Jenni….Atli has hit the “terrible two’s” and is keeping his mother beyond busy running after him! Lol Kyla is staring at the last 3 days of school until September…and we all know what that means…FINALS!!! She’s is stressing out as she does every year, but I’m sure she will do just fine, as she always does!! And just think..next year is Grade 12 for her…man I’m feeling OLD!! LOL

We are all done foaling for the year, and couldn’t be more pleased with the foal crop!  Score Me A Touchdown is proving to be quite the sire!!  He’s putting is pretty chipmunk head on everything as well as his hip and “ho hum” temperament. Then add in that he’s batting 100% when bred to Paint mares - both solid and colored!! WOO HOO

This is the first breeding year for Scotch N Chips, Ohsocool, and A Noble Tradition.  We are both excited and a little nervous as we await the 2011 foal by these stallions, as none of them are proven.  However, genetically with the crosses we made we do feel that we should have some really great foals on the ground.  Since Scotch N Chips is my “baby”, I’m really pumped about next spring.  With the exception of Miss Solis Te being bred to Ima Bo. Score Me A Touchdown will be taken out of pasture on the 28th of June, and “what will be, will be” as far as mares that caught.  Weaning will start the middle of next month…Let the hollering begin LOL.

We have made the decision to put Doc Deluxe down this fall.  This is not something that any one of us is looking forward to, nor was it an easy one to make.  Doc has been a real blessing to us, although crippled from early in life, and badly, badly abused before his last 2 homes, he has been nothing but a sweet heart in a grumpy, painful body.  As are winters are extremely harsh, and the snow deep (even in the sheltered pens) we will be putting Doc down before he has to endure another one.  He will remain part of our breeding program thru his 2010 daughter “The Girls Gone Solo” and his 2009 colt “Dr Jonathan Pine”.

On a more “up” note, I have started riding Barlnks Connection (Harley) and he is doing very, very well.  He is such a lovey type of guy that someone is really going to have a great horse. He’s only got about 12 rides on him, but he is taking everything in stride. NSR Smooth Lil Zip (Lily) is home from the barns in Moose Jaw where she was being ridden by Shaunna Plourde and her daughter Sara. Lily is going great, and really has a soft mouth/sides.  She is such a sweetie to deal with!  Pick A Layne Fella (Layne), Lookin Forsum Touch (Woody), and Don’t Touch My Barbie (Barbie) are all in the barn being fit on for Halter.  Barbie will be headed to the 5 Star Futurity in Lincoln, NE for September, and the boys are being fit on for the August Canadian Nationals Show in Red Deer, AB. There are others that will be broke to ride over the next month, and we will keep you updated on that.

We also purchased two yearling geldings from Liz Hickling of Aspenwest Paint Horses.  Bold Remarque (Remington) is a grey overo that has HUS written all over him!! He is to be my project for the fall and next spring, while the other gelding Xpress O (Starbucks), who is a bay tobiano is our daughter Kyla’s project.  Kyla is hoping to do Trail in hand this fall with him, and have him riding for the WP classes in the late spring.

Well, as I said in the beginning of this “essay” we have been quite a busy crew! Take Care & Enjoy your Summer!!

Shannon & the Crew

May 8th, 2010

Well, the hectic certainly hasn't slowed down the last 3 wks! lol  The last little bit has been filled with both ups, and downs.  As I write this, we are waiting on two mares yet to foal - One mare is overdue by 5 days now.  Once she foals we get a bit of a reprieve until the 18th of June, that is if you call breeding season in full swing a reprieve! lol

We currently have 3 foals on the ground 2 by Score Me A Touchdown, and one by Ima Bo, & are waiting on our one Doc Deluxe foal and the June Score Me A Touchdown foal.  We unfortunately lost twins by Ima Bo out of Xpressive Eyed.  The stud colt made it 36 hrs, only to take a drastic and quick turn for the worse. He went from bucking and playing to deceased in 3 hrs.

We currently have 2 mares in foal for 2011 - AQHA WC Producer Heres Looking At U Mr is confirmed in foal to Score Me A Touchdown for a late March/early April foal.  Too Kechi A Cowgirl (Lena) is in foal to A Noble Tradition as well for a mid-March foal.

We are currently working on the site for our breeding lab to be built, and with any luck it will be completed before the end of the month.  Once this years breeding season is over, and all the boys are trained to the phantom, we will be offering on farm AI's as well as TCS to the public.

Riding and fitting of the show horses was put on hold due to our lovely weather (nothing lovely about 3 inches of snow overnight for 4 nights & rain all day long lol), and mares foaling.  We literally ran out of room in the barn, and had portable panels set up in the arena for the newly gelded boys.  Mares foaling takes priority, so ALL of the show string ended up outside with double and triple blankets on!!  The weather is returning to seasonal, so we should be able to get the mares with foals out on the pasture, and the show string back in the barn by Tuesday or Wednesday. Then, LOOK OUT, as it's "go man go" time!!  There are 4 broke riders waiting for time spent, and another 4 getting started as soon as you can get to the round pen and arena without needing hip waders!! lol We also have 4 halter horses getting fit on for the August/September shows.

The month of May will see us spending the majority of our time getting ready for the late summer/fall show circuit both here in Canada, and across the line in the US.  We have a few Halter horses that will be going to our trainers (Aaron Hall of Kechi, KS) after the Canadian Nationals in August to qualify (or finish qualifying) for the 2011 AQHA World Show, and a few that we will be offering for sale after the Regional Experience.  June will see us full swing in the breeding shed.  After having to kick the entire show string out to accommodate mares foaling, we have decided to breed for a few early foals, but the vast majority of our mares will be bred to foal out in May of 2011.  We are doing this with the hopes that the weather will cooperate, and the show string can remain in the barn.  Not that the best laid plans always work, but here's hoping!! LOL

Until next time - Take care!

April 19th, 2010

Well, things have been busy, busy, busy around the farm!

Zavaduk Quarter Horses has undergone a few "people" changes. We (Trevor/Shannon) are sad to see Emma McCubbing leave the operation, but she felt it necessary to explore other passions before she is of an age that that is no longer possible.  Emma is currently in Nova Scotia visiting with her sister Nancy and I'm sure driving Sandy (Nancy's husband) nuts wanting to go fishing (one of Emma's other passions). We wish her nothing but Happiness!!

We are just tickled to welcome Jennifer and Jason Dayringer, along with their 2 yr old son Atli to the ZQH Family.  Jason/Jennifer are both assisting with the day to day operations of the ranch in various duties....from the house to the running of the barn.  Atli's job is to keep us all entertained and dole out cheezie smiles every chance he gets!!

Chad "Lopez" Cayer rejoined the ZQH Family the end of March 2010.  Chad was with us the majority of 2009, but took time away to explore other options.  He has since returned to assist with the ranch as well as take over driving the escort/pilot truck.  Chad's taking over the pilot truck allows Shannon to stay on ranch to fit horses, AI mares, and oversee the daily operation of Zavaduk Quarter Horses.

Trevor, Kyla and I would like to say "WELCOME TO THE FAMILY" and THANK YOU for all that you do!!
